Captain Shawn's
Fishing Report for January 2008

Well guy's, the winter is definitely here and it is time to talk about changing up the tricks to catch the fish we are after this time of year. Lets start off with the Trout and Redfish. You can usually find the bigger trout in deeper water over nice thick grass. The best seems to be water that is between 4'-7' deep and if they are on the bite you should know it rather quickly. I have been going out of my way to catch shiners up until last week when they finally decided they didn't want shiners anymore and that is when I switched to shrimp. There are still shiners around but they don't seem to be working very well however they do like the shrimp and they don't have to be the big jumbo ones either. They are just as happy to eat a small one as a big one so why waist your money. The reds are doing about the same thing only in different places. They seem to be holding around deeper docks and sea walls, anywhere that holds a little heat or structure and if you can find that facing the east it is even better with the sun warming up the structure. The biggest thing that is happening is the grouper fishing. This time of year these fish migrate in from the deep to the close near shore reefs, ledges, and hard bottom. They are also in the bay itself and with each passing cold front there seem to be more and more nice size fish in shallower water. There are a lot of different ways to find these fish and everyone who fishes for them has there own trick to finding them. You can troll or just drop live pinfish, squid, or frozen sardines down to them. If you are off shore there are a tun of Key West Grunts around and all you will need for them is a small shrimp or a small piece of squid on a lighter rig with a small 1.0 hook and if you are on them you should know it as soon as you get your bait to the bottom. There are a lot of possibilities out there right now but you do have to do one important thing, Get out there and catch them.
